Animal rights activists and agricultural researchers are renewing their requires pressing authorities intervention to cease the unlawful donkey pores and skin commerce in Ghana.

They warn that the nation’s donkey inhabitants may quickly disappear except stronger measures are applied.

The brand new marketing campaign is supported by Roger Canton and the Preventing Donkey Extinction (FADE) mission, as donkey slaughter is reported to be on the rise in northern Ghana.

Throughout an operation in Accra, Roger Canton warned that donkeys stay crucial to the survival of many rural communities, significantly in northern Ghana, the place they’re extensively used for agriculture, transportation and fertilizer manufacturing.

“Hen that lays the golden egg,” he stated, “will you slaughter and eat it? No, you’ll defend it.”

He added that beliefs about caring for donkeys are robust in some communities, making the state of affairs much more troublesome.

“When you go to the Volga area, the Hurafra and Nankani tribes really feel that they cannot do something if the donkey will get sick. It is a matter between the donkey and its god. So there isn’t any have to waste cash on treating the donkey,” he defined.

Mr Canton known as on the federal government to implement sustainable livestock safety insurance policies and absolutely implement present native legal guidelines towards the commerce in donkey skins.

“This regulation already exists. It was handed by ECOWAS and the AU. So what we’re saying is that as a result of Ghana is a member of these two establishments, we anticipate the federal government to implement these legal guidelines. That is it,” he stated.

Animal rights teams have repeatedly warned that the rising demand for donkey skins, primarily from worldwide markets, threatens the livelihoods of native communities that rely closely on animals for his or her every day financial actions.
