International Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has revealed that 26 Ghanaian prisoners of struggle have been among the many first 300 displaced folks repatriated from South Africa on Wednesday, Could 27, following latest xenophobic assaults.

After the evacuees arrived at Accra Worldwide Airport, Mr Abrakwa expressed his gratitude to the South African authorities for permitting the prisoners to return house with different evacuees.

He stated the people had been detained for violating South Africa’s visa and residence allow rules.

“Let me welcome the 26 Ghanaians that we negotiated with. They have been in jail and detained for visa violations. We negotiated with the South African authorities and the South African authorities agreed with us that we do not need anybody to be locked up in jail as a result of we’re evacuating our personal folks,” he disclosed.

“I might due to this fact prefer to thank President Cyril Ramaphosa and South Africa’s Minister of International Affairs for accepting our plea,” he added.

Mr Ablakwa additional stated that evacuation drills had confirmed that no Ghanaians remained in South African prisons.

“There are at the moment no Ghanaians in any prisons in South Africa. We have now despatched everybody house,” he stated.

The minister defined that the evacuation is a part of the federal government’s efforts to guard Ghanaians affected by the most recent wave of xenophobic violence in South Africa.

The federal government had beforehand introduced plans to evacuate Ghanaians dwelling in South Africa who want to return house amid heightened safety issues.

He added that returnees will obtain the mandatory help to make sure a clean reintegration into Ghanaian society.
