Chamber of Petroleum Shoppers (COPEC) Secretary-Basic Duncan Amoah has justified the 20% improve in public transport fares introduced by the Transport Union, arguing that the adjustment is justified given the elevated prices going through transport operators.

His remarks got here after the Ghana Non-public Street Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Industrial Transport Operator revealed that new transport fares will probably be utilized throughout the nation from June 2, 2026, with a 20 per cent improve in fares.

“Let me begin by saying that transport operators have been very beneficiant to all of us,” he informed Metropolis Information Digest. “You’ll be able to think about that if we proceed to cost very outdated fares at this time limit, when gas costs are already scheduled to rise once more on Monday, it might develop into unsustainable to function.”

“It’s true that they have been those who determined to cut back the fares when gas was 15. Now that gas is again to fifteen once more, it will be pure for us to offer them some room to regulate again to the earlier stage,” he added.

Mr. Amoah additionally identified that many transport operators, particularly operators of intercity and long-distance providers, have already revised their fares upward. Subsequently, it’s unrealistic to count on GPRTU members to proceed charging their earlier charges regardless of the present financial state of affairs, he mentioned.

“It will be an enormous disservice to insist to the GPRTU and different transport operators that they need to follow the outdated fares at this level. So, aside from having to ask them once more what the premise for the 20% is, I feel this adjustment is cheap.”

Mr. Amoah supported the fare adjustment, however mentioned in his view a 15% improve would have been extra applicable.

Nonetheless, he acknowledged that transport operators are prone to be contemplating numerous further working prices, resembling larger insurance coverage premiums and better prices of spare elements.
